Drugs and addictions

When people think of the term "addiction" they often think about this only in terms of drug addictions. There are however a whole range of different types of behavioural addictions, ranging from addictive patterns of thinking, to substance dependences which can range from alcohol addictions and other drug based addictions such as cannabis and cocaine. In all instances there are usually two elements contained in the behavior, the physical addiction and the habitual addiction associated with the behavior.

The habitual addiction manifests in the way in which the individual thinks, feels and responds in exactly the same manner, usually in an entirely predictable pattern. In 2007 I gave a talk to the staff members of the Leeds Community Drug Treatment Services and asked the 26 counselors present how many of their clients would respond in exactly the same way during each weekly session, sitting the same way, asking the same questions with the exact same use of language and same tonality.

Many clients were convinced that they have few if any choices in life and of course for many of them their world revolved totally around their drug of choice.
Interestingly many of the practitioners felt quite drained from such interactions and were very receptive to many of the approaches I outlined in my own Leeds Therapeutic Practice.

"As head of a busy community drug service, the most significant element I witnessed in his training for my team that has proved to be important in our work with addicted clients has been without a doubt the powerful insight he provided that profound change is not only possible and desirable - but that it is not a time bound process. We are used to assuming that our work will be slow and painstaking - Nick reminded us of the human potential for swift and dramatic change."

IEMT with Andrew T Austin

We just completed the 2 day IEMT event with Andy (Rainbow Man) T Austin. I had a brief overview of this process when Andy did an evening on this earlier in the year and this was enough to get together an invitation only audience to attend a full weekend.I have know Andy for a fair while and always been impressed with his attitude and level of skill in working with clients, so in short I had high expectations. I was genuinely quite taken aback at how comprehensive this course was, delivered with a real fluidity and solidly researched. It's rare that a training fires up my brain as much as this one did and in recent years only the Frank Farrelly events have done so. I will certainly be using what I learned from this event with private clients!

Angry people

I see lots of angry people each month and NLP and Hypnosis are excellent tools for working with this condition. Before working as a practitioner and therapist I have even worked with colleagues who had anger issues. One memorable one who was Welsh, smoked endlessley throughout the day, played loud music while at work and always looked a bit like Michael Douglas in the movie "Falling Down" I bumped into him today and he looked as stressed and as angry as ever! This is a great example of someone who has got stuck in an emotional loop which often results in excessive drinking and other compulsions.
The secret to curing anger issues is to give the client the opportunity to experience a wider range of states and especially the state of relaxation. This is usually sorted in 2 - 3 sessions and on average I see someone each week with this kind of problem.

Treating Phobias in Leeds

I have treated lots of phobias using NLP, Hypnotherapy and Provocative Therapy in my Leeds Private Practice. More on the individual phobias can be found at http://www.nickkemp.com/ and some of the approaches can be found on the http://www.provocativechangeworks.com/ site
Phobias come in all shapes and sizes, the mst popular being fear of public speaking. A fear is an abmornal fear to a place or a thing and its generally accepted that the only two natural fears are fear of sudden loud noises and fear of falling.

Hypnotherapy, NLP and Provocative Therapy in Leeds

My private practice for NLP, Hypnotherapy and Provocative Therapy is at The Orchard in Leeds. This is a great location with its own free parking and with easy reach of motorways. I will use different approaches with different client conditions and often combine approaches to great effect. Finding a practice which is quiet is quite a challenge as in central Leeds it can be pretty noisy!
Each session is usually an hour, so I'll usually limit slots to 5 a day, sometimes back to back and sometimes with a break. There are pros and cons for both and of course clients can be very different, so its essential to have a wide range of skills and approaches. As I say to all my students the best advice is simply to "watch and listen" rather than predetermining what "you imagine" the client needs ahead of time!

Blushing

My first case of working with a "blusher" was a number of years ago and at that time I considered this to be a rare condition. These days I see a wide range of men and women of all ages and backgrounds with this problem on a weekly basis.
"Blushers" often describe this problem as feeling extremely self conscious with changes in body temperature, and "going red" Often this sense of "going red" is a feeling of this occurring, rather than actually seeing a change in skin pigmentation. Hypnotherapy and NLP are excellent in changing the old response, as, like all phobias this is created at an emotional level and once the "emotional charge" that creates this behaviour is changed, the individual finds welcome relief!

The challenge with this condition is that the more the person thinks about it, the more it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy with the "blusher" creating the exact same thoughts and feelings that maintain the problem. Often the client has a number of ongoing thoughts about this problem that are not useful.
A common example of this includes, perhaps not surprisingly:

"I am going to go red" (said or thought in an anxious tone of voice!)
I usually allocate two sessions to deal with this condition and have had considerable success in working with clients, many of whom have tried numerous other approaches without previous success.

I am part of the international "Just Be Well" network of NLP practitioners which correctly describes treating this condition in the following way:
"We will work with you to literally reprogram the response ahead of time. A crucial difference between someone who suffers from excessive blushing and someone who does not, is that the person who blushes excessively, imagines, or worries in advance, that they will be blushing when they are in certain situations. The person who doesn't worry, or imagine, they are going to blush in these situations, tends to do so far less often"
I see clients with this condition almost every single week and have developed a number of approaches that work really well in resolving this issue. More details at the private sessions section of www.nickkemp.com

Non analysis as an approach

One of the real benefits of using a combination of Hypnotherapy, NLP and Provocative Therapy is that these are what I would describe as "non analytical approaches". I don't ask the client to "analyse" or focus on the past, but instead to focus on what is possible in the future. Some traditional therapies focus on the "why?" when working with clients, rather than "how?" which is far more revealing. When working with clients I am concerned with how they are creating the problem, to create a new set of possibilities. As I have already mentioned this is an accelerated approach to lasting change and although no practitioner can guarantee results, I have a very high success rate with clients and most of them only require 2 - 3 sessions.

Time keeping in sessions

Most clients arrive on time, but over the years there have been some notable exceptions. One client once arrived 3 hours early, another a week early and he record for lateness is two hours. In any given day I may see up to 6 clients back to back, so punctuality is crucial! I work at The Orchard in Leeds which is an excellent venue and offers an extensive range of treatments including hypnotherapy, NLP, physical therapies, EMDR and many other approaches

Client expectations and following advice

Client expectations relating to progress can vary massively. I get lots of referrals from Paul McKenna's office and some people can have absolutely crazy expectations in respect of not having to "do anything different" but expecting a longstanding "problem" to be resolved in an hour!

Many problems can and are sorted in a couple of sessions, when the client follows instructions and listens back to the original recording of the sessions! However everyone is different and as one of my mentors Frank Farrelly says "You'll never get 100%!"

June, the busiest month of he year

I have never quie figured out why, but for many years June has consistantly been the busiest month in private practice, usually with a 2 week waiting list for people to see me. In fact its so busy, that I now schedule extra appointments for urgent cases. The great thing about where I work is that its easy to get to, quiet and there is free parking. All appointments are an hour or two hours and this is sufficient to deal with most conditions

Check the private sessions section of http://www.nickkemp.com/ for details

Fridays in private practice

I see most clients on Thursdays and Fridays in Leeds. I usually start work at 9am and run through until around 4pm, sometimes without a break! Clients come with a wide range of conditions and many will travel, especially those who have been recommended from Paul McKenna's office and from the Just Be Well network.
All clients who come to Leeds for NLP, Hypnosis and Provocative Therapy complete a set of client notes prior to any session and all sessions are recorded for the client to listen back to at a later date. Details of the booking process can be found at

Following instructions...

Most clients I see get excellent results. The ones that don't usually don't follow suggested instructions and the most common aspect of this is not listening back to the CD of the NLP or Hypnosis session. In many instances "problems" can be resolved in a very short period of time and testimonials on http://www.nickkemp.com/ show typical feedback!
